SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Opponents of same-sex marriage have given Gov. Gary Herbert's office a list of 18,600 names of people who signed online petitions supporting traditional marriage and Utah's defense of its gay marriage ban.
Representatives from the nonprofit conservative groups United Families International and the Sutherland Institute delivered the names Friday morning.
Sutherland Institute spokesman David Buer says the names are those of people signed two online petitions.
One petition expressed support for Herbert and Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes defending the voter-approved same-sex marriage ban all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Another petition expressed support for traditional marriage.
Buer says the groups only submitted first names to the governor because many signers were concerned about their privacy.
