RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A lawyer for former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell says his client's conviction today on corruption charges will be appealed. A federal jury in Richmond, Virginia, convicted McDonnell and his wife Maureen of taking bribes from a wealthy vitamin executive. Between them, they are convicted of 20 counts and face up to 30 years each in prison when they're sentenced in January.
NEWPORT, Wales (AP) — President Barack Obama and British Prime Minister David Cameron are working to form a coalition to take on the group Islamic State. In a joint editorial, Obama and Cameron said "an isolationist approach" is a misunderstanding of the threat posed by extremists. They are among Western leaders attending a NATO summit in Wales.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Officials at the Ferguson, Missouri, Police Department say they welcome a Justice Department investigation of the department's practices. The inquiry is part of a broader Justice Department effort to investigate troubled police departments and, when pervasive problems are found, direct changes to be made. A separate civil rights investigation is already in effect into the fatal shooting of an unarmed black 18-year-old by a white Ferguson officer.
MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) —A suburban Atlanta man has been charged with murder in connection with the death of his son in a hot car. Prosecutors say Justin Ross Harris sat in his office exchanging nude photos with women while his son was in the car for hours. Prosecutors say they plan to prove that Harris intentionally left his son Cooper in the hot car to die.
NEW YORK (AP) — Comedian Gilbert Gottfried says the world has become "a less funny place." That was his reaction to the death of comedian Joan Rivers today in New York. Rivers, who was 81, had been hospitalized since last week after going into cardiac arrest during a visit to a doctor's office. Fellow acid-tongued comic Don Rickles says working with and sharing fun times with Rivers "was special."
