SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Salt Lake County Sheriff Jim Winder says he blames an immigration law and the Utah Legislature for a $75,000 court settlement to a lawsuit. The ACLU suit accused the county of keeping a Weber State University student behind bars for 46 days after he posted bail. Winder said Senate Bill 81 required his department to hold Enrique Uroza while deputies determined if Uroza was in the country illegally.
PROVO, Utah (AP) — A sentencing hearing has been postponed in a sexual abuse case filed against Utah County doctor Martin MacNeill, who was also convicted of killing his wife. MacNeill's sentencing was scheduled for yesterday but is now set for Sept. 15. Prosecutors said MacNeill abused his adult daughter in 2007, one month after his wife was found dead.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A federal judge in Salt Lake City has ordered the FBI to investigate allegations one of its agents pressured a witness not to testify in a trial about videos related to the Oklahoma City bombing. Attorney Jesse Trentadue claims the FBI urged a former government operative not to testify, a claim the agency calls baseless.
PHOENIX (AP) — Highway officials are warning motorists traveling on Interstate 15 in the southwest corner of Utah over the Labor Day weekend to expect traffic delays and to allow extra travel time. Delays of up to two hours have been reported on the section of I-15 in the Virgin River Gorge on previous holiday weekends. I-15 narrows to one lane in each direction at a bridge construction project about 20 miles south of St. George.
