PROVO, Utah (AP) — Some Provo residents are tying black ribbons around downtown trees they fear will be uprooted to make room for a planned rapid bus service.
Residents worried about losing trees and the shade they cast began tying the ribbons on trees lining the city's University Avenue last month.
Transportation officials are still planning the bus rapid transit system, which will feature bus-only lanes.
Provo officials are reviewing proposed street designs and say they hope the project will relocate or save trees.
The proposal designs will be available for public comment sometime this fall.
The Daily Herald reports (http://bit.ly/XyTbZH) up to 87 trees between Center Street and 500 North could be removed for the project.
