FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) — Missouri's governor says his deployment of the National Guard will help "in restoring peace and order" to a suburban St. Louis town torn apart by the shooting of an unarmed black teen by a white police officer. Protests over the fatal shooting in Ferguson have included violence for days with little sign of calming despite a curfew.
EDGARTOWN, Mass. (AP) — President Barack Obama has abandoned his Martha's Vineyard vacation for a couple of days to return to the White House and attend meetings with Vice President Joe Biden and other advisers on Iraq and the unrest in Ferguson, Missouri. The White House had announced Obama's plans to return before the U.S. airstrikes in Iraq began and before the shooting of a teen in Ferguson. Part of the decision appears aimed at countering criticism that Obama is vacationing amid foreign and domestic crises.
CHICAGO (AP) — Researchers say a 10-year analysis that finds an increase in disabilities among U.S. children may partly reflect more awareness and recognition that conditions, such as autism, require a specific diagnosis to receive special services. The study finds a bigger rise in mental and developmental problems in children from wealthier families but disadvantaged kids still bear a disproportionate burden.
MOSCOW (AP) — A Russian aid convoy is still on its own side of the border but Moscow says the extensive humanitarian mission for eastern Ukraine expects to enter the country soon. Speaking at news conference in Berlin, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov says "all questions" regarding the mission had been removed and that agreement had been reached with Ukraine and the International Red Cross.
KATMANDU, Nepal (AP) — Emergency aid is being delivered to areas where monsoon floods have displaced thousands of people and killed at least 180 in recent days. Authorities in Nepal and neighboring India say they've been sending food, medical supplies and tents to cut-off villages in western Nepal. Most roads into the area are submerged or damaged by flooding. Neighboring India has also suffered torrential rains.
