ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — A northern New York couple is being held without bail after their arraignment in the kidnapping of two Amish girls from a farm stand. Stephen Howells II and Nicole Vaisey, both of Hermon, are charged with two counts of first-degree kidnapping. They entered no pleas and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for Thursday.
FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) — The suburban St. Louis police officer who shot an unarmed black teen is described as "a gentle, quiet man" who had been "an excellent officer." Police identified him as 28-year-old Darren Wilson. Police also released documents alleging the man who was killed was a suspect in a convenience store theft. Benjamin Crump, an attorney for Michael brown's family, says police are trying to justify his killing by releasing the robbery information.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Presidential hopeful and Texas Republican Gov. Rick Perry is facing a grand jury indictment alleging abuse of power. Perry had made good on a threat to veto $7.5 million over two years for the public integrity unit run by the office of Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg. The Democratic official was convicted of DUI, but refused Perry's repeated calls to resign.
ISLAMABAD (AP) — Tens of thousands of protesters defied pouring rain in Pakistan's capital to demand the resignation of the prime minister in the biggest challenge yet to the country's government. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who took office just a year ago in the first democratic transfer of power in a country long plagued by military coups, has said he'll stay in power. The protesters allege election fraud.
CAPE BLANCO, Ore. (AP) — A private commercial chemical tanker is stranded 700 miles off the Oregon coast after an engine room fire killed a crew member and rendered the vessel unable to move. The Coast Guard says marine engineers from a cutter at the scene will see if they can get the vessel moving under its own power.
