FLORISSANT, Mo. (AP) — There's been a changing of the guard in the St. Louis suburb that has been seething since the weekend shooting of an unarmed black teen by a white officer. Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon says security will be overseen by Capt. Ron Johnson of the Highway Patrol. Johnson, who is black, grew up in Ferguson. There has been intense criticism of the police response to protests. There have been four straight nights of clashes between demonstrators and heavily-armed officers.
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says there will more U.S. airstrikes in northern Iraq against Islamic extremists. He says the attacks are needed to protect Americans and U.S. facilities in Iraq. The president says the U.S. military has help prevent the slaughter of thousands of members of a religious minority trapped on a mountaintop. Obama says the situation "remains dire" throughout Iraq. In Baghdad, Nouri al-Maliki has relinquished power as prime minister.
ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) — The highest-ranking U.S. military officer to be killed in combat since Vietnam has been buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery. Maj. Gen. Harold J. Greene was killed last week when a gunman believed to be an Afghan soldier opened fire at a military academy near Kabul.
BALTIMORE (AP) — Rob Manfred has been elected baseball's 10th commissioner and will succeed Bud Selig in January. Manfred is a labor lawyer who has worked for Major League Baseball since 1998. He beat out Boston Red Sox Chairman Tom Werner on in the first contested vote for a new commissioner in 46 years.
TORONTO (AP) — His thumbs are mechanical, but he's a wiz at catching rides from strangers across Canada. A professor at Ontario's McMaster University says HitchBOT is nearing the end of its journey from Canada's east to west coast. Researchers are using the device to study the relationship between people and technology. HitchBOT has traveled from Nova Scotia to British Columbia.
