WALTERBORO, S.C. (AP) — The Colleton County School Board is suing in federal court over state changes to school board election districts.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reports (http://bit.ly/1BdJ5ww ) the lawsuit filed Tuesday names members of the county legislative delegation including state Sen. Clementa Pinckney of Ridgeland.
Pinckney wrote a bill in May that moved board members P.A. Pournelle and William Bowman Jr., into other election districts.
Some residents and board members say the change was political payback after the two board members voted to dismiss district Superintendent Leila Williams earlier this year.
Pinckney says the change was to make sure election districts have racial balance as required under the federal Voting Rights Act. The lawsuit seeks to block use of the new districts and have them redrawn.
