The ESPN sports writer said since we have nothing better to do and because all of the Mormons here in Utah have to go around smiling and being happy all the time, the only place we can let off some steam is at a Jazz game. Obviously Bucher hasn’t driven on I-15 and received that one finger wave from the driver who just cut you off in traffic. In fact it’s easy to see by their choice of beverage that the rowdiest fans in the EnergySolutions arena are not LDS. It might be considered a back handed compliment since he claims he was trying to say it seemed out of character for all of us nice folks in Utah to get so mean at Jazz games. What Bucher was doing was stereotyping, just like I would be doing if I called him a big dump jock. (hmmm). It’s not the first time. The Salt Lake Convention and Visitors Bureau used to put out a list of the oddest questions out of towners would ask, like “Where can I get Mormon food?” (Are funeral potatoes on the menu anywhere?) And when I moved here years ago friends told me to say hi to Donny and Marie like the Osmonds were standing at the state line greeting everyone who came in. Unfortunately we all stereotype at times whether it’s about Mormons, illegal immigrants or, as I’ve been guilty of, rap artists. So there’s a lesson to be learned here. If you don’t know what you’re talking about, SHUT UP.
