MORELAND, Idaho (AP) — A popular high school teacher is refusing to sign a new contract, saying it contains vindictive and punitive language. Snake River High School science teacher Elaine Asmus kept her job last spring after former students rallied to her defense. Her attorney tells the Idaho State Journal that Asmus is considering her options.

LEWISTON, Idaho (AP) — Five structures have been destroyed by a wildfire burning in northern Idaho. Big Cougar Fire spokesman Tom Rhodes says it's unclear if the destroyed structures are homes or outbuildings in the remote area accessible only by boat. Firefighters are planning a burnout operation to halt the fire's northeast expansion.

LEWISTON, Idaho (AP) — Two conservation groups say they plan to sue the federal government over a proposal to expand and repair a backcountry airstrip in northern Idaho. Wilderness Watch and the Friends of the Clearwater tell the Lewiston Tribune that the expansion of Fish Lake Airstrip in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness Area will harm threatened bull trout.

GRANGEVILLE, Idaho (AP) — Two Utah men have died in a small plane crash in north-central Idaho. The Idaho County Sheriff's Office says 57-year-old pilot David Fitzgerald and 61-year-old Randy Butters died when their two-seat, single-engine experimental craft went down in a remote area near Yellow Pine. The bodies were recovered yesterday and taken to a funeral home in Grangeville.
