CANNON BEACH, Ore. (AP) — Authorities in Oregon say they have in custody a woman whose 2-year-old daughter was found dead at a coastal resort. Authorities had been looking for 40-year-old Jessica Smith after the woman's toddler was found dead and her 13-year-old daughter was found seriously injured Friday by a housekeeper at the resort.
PETROLIA, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say remains found on a Northern California riverbank are those of an ex-convict suspected of killing his wife and two young daughters last year. Dental records have determined that the remains found in Shasta County belong to Shane Miller, who had been wanted for questioning in the shooting deaths of his wife and daughters, ages 8 and 5.
OAK GLEN, Calif. (AP) — Some 2,500 California residents are trapped in two San Bernardino County towns because of flash flooding that's covered roads with mud, rock and debris. Authorities are telling people in Oak Glen and Forest Falls to stay put while crews clear the roads with bulldozers. Flash floods also led to the rescue of at least two people in the San Bernardino Mountains Sunday.
GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israel has pulled most of its ground troops out of the Gaza Strip. But heavy fighting rages on in parts of Gaza, with at least 10 people killed in what U.N. and Palestinian officials say was an Israeli airstrike near a U.N. shelter. Israel launched its military operation on Gaza July 8, in response to weeks of heavy rocket fire. More than 1,800 Palestinians and more than 60 Israelis have been killed.
CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Australia's government is considering intervening in the case of a sick Down syndrome baby who the child's biological parents have left with his surrogate mother in Thailand. The biological parents have taken the baby's healthy twin sister back to their home in Australia. The surrogate, a 21-year-old food vendor, is taking care of the 7-month-old, who has a congenital heart condition.
