WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says he's taking action on his own because Congress is doing so little for working families. In his weekly radio and Internet address, Obama says the economy is improving and that he's been pushing policies addressing jobs, student loans and wages. He says Congress left town for its August vacation with unfinished business.
LONDON (AP) — Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron says NATO must rethink its long-term relationship with Russia following its "illegal" actions in Ukraine. In a letter to alliance leaders released today, Cameron says it is clear that Russia views NATO as an adversary. He says NATO must strengthen its ability to respond quickly to any threat, and agree on how to sustain a robust presence in Eastern Europe.
GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — Saturday has brought a new round of shelling and airstrikes by Israel in Gaza. And troops are on the move in a search for an officer that the military says was captured yesterday by Hamas. Officials in Gaza say locations struck today include a university in Gaza City. At least 35 Palestinians have been killed today.
BEIJING (AP) — The death toll has risen to 68 in an explosion at an automotive plant in eastern China. Officials say the facility, about 600 miles southeast of Beijing, makes supplies for General Motors. The government news agency also says nearly 200 others were injured, most with severe burns.
PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) — Oscar Pistorius' brother Carl has been "badly hurt" in a car accident after a head-on collision on a highway in South Africa. A relative though says Pistorius sustained multiple fractures but is now "out of danger." Carl Pistorius went to trial and was acquitted last year of a negligent killing charge after being involved in a road accident in 2008 in which a female motorcyclist died.
