WASHINGTON (AP) — Secretary of State John Kerry is condemning what he calls an "outrageous" violation by Palestinian militants of the Gaza cease-fire he helped to broker. Kerry is also demanding the immediate release of an Israeli soldier apparently abducted by the radical Hamas movement. In a statement, Kerry says the militant attack, which killed two soldiers, came despite assurances that both sides had given to the United Nations about respecting the cease-fire. Kerry says he has spoken with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (neh-ten-YAH'-hoo) about the developments, which led Israel to declare the cease-fire over.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate has approved $225 million to replenish Israel's missile defense system, and House approval is expected before lawmakers begin a summer break. The money will go to restocking Israel's Iron Dome defense, which has been credited with shooting down dozens of incoming rockets fired by Hamas during a three-week war.
NEW YORK (AP) — Plans are underway to bring back one of the two American aid workers sick with Ebola in Africa. A small private jet based in Atlanta has been dispatched to Liberia, where the two sick Americans work for missionary groups. Officials say the jet is outfitted with a special, portable tent designed for transporting patients with highly infectious diseases. The two Americans are Dr. Kent Brantly and Nancy Writebol. The plane can only carry one patient and officials have not said who is to be picked up. Atlanta's Emory University Hospital says it expects one of the patients to be transferred there "within the next several days." The hospital has a special isolation unit.
LAPEER, Mich. (AP) — Bond has been set at $500,000 for a couple charged with second-degree murder after their dogs fatally mauled a jogger on a rural Michigan road. The couple (Valbona Lucaj and husband Sebastiano Quagliata) appeared in front of a magistrate today. They're also charged with possessing a dangerous animal causing death. The woman is from Albania and the man is from Italy. And a judge earlier this year refused to overturn a decision rejecting their application for U.S. citizenship.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Crews have begun removing cars trapped by flooding from a broken water line on the UCLA campus. Repair crews are shoring up a giant hole in the middle of Sunset Boulevard caused by a ruptured pipe, as officials at UCLA continue to assess damage from the 20 million gallons that inundated the campus. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power says work on the pipe itself is expected to be completed late today or early tomorrow. Then work could begin on repairing the famed boulevard.
