UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Ukraine's U.N. ambassador says the Malaysia Airlines jet that crashed in eastern Ukraine on Thursday with 298 people aboard would not have gone down if Russia hadn't given separatists a sophisticated missile system that can hit planes. Yuriy Sergeyev tells The Associated Press that Russia bears responsibility for the disaster, along with the separatists, whom he calls "terrorists." Russian President Vladimir Putin says Ukraine's government is responsible because it's been pursuing a military campaign against the rebels.
GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — The thud of tank shells is echoing across the Gaza Strip as dawn approaches there. Israeli soldiers have rolled into the Palestinian territory in a ground invasion aimed at destroying Hamas' rocket-firing abilities and the tunnels militants use to infiltrate Israel. An official in the Gaza security operations room says all of the seaside strip's border areas are being shelled and Hamas fighters have been exchanging fire with Israeli troops near a town in northern Gaza.
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Jerry Sandusky's adopted son Matthew says his sexual abuse at the former Penn State coach's hands consisted of oral sex, a more serious allegation than he made to detectives two years ago. Matthew Sandusky spoke Thursday on "Oprah Prime." His claims of abuse arose during the 2012 trial that resulted in a 45-count conviction, but Jerry Sandusky has never been charged with any crime in relation to his adopted son.
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) — Police are investigating what appears to be a human head found in a Long Island town where two severed arms were discovered about a week ago. Hempstead, New York, police say investigators are trying to determine if the body parts are linked to a partially dismembered body found earlier this month in a municipal parking lot in Bay Shore, about 25 miles east of Hempstead.
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina's poet laureate is resigning amid criticism of the governor for choosing her. Gov. Pat McCrory's appointment of Valerie Macon drew criticism from the state's established writers for not following the traditional method, which involves a committee of writers appointed by the North Carolina Arts Council. Macon has just two self-published books of poems to her credit.
