Dr. Kim Mulvhill reportingHousework: How much time do you spend doing chores? And who does the most, married, single, men or women?
Researchers from the University of Michigan have been tracking housework trends since 1968, so they've got lots of data.
This study was based on time diaries, and over the last 30 years there have some big changes. Overall, the amount done by women has dropped considerably, while the amount done by men has increased.
Housework per Week
2005
- Women - 17 hours
- Men - 13 hours
Women: before you say "I do," do the math.
Having a husband means adding an extra seven hours of housework to your work load every week.
For men, what a deal! When guys tie the knot, they save an extra hour in chores.
A suggestion? If you're not going to pick up your socks, you may want to spend that time picking up flowers.
And I'm sure it comes as no surprise that having kids makes for even more chores.
Married women with more than three kids did an average of twenty-eight hours a week, while their mates logged about 10.
