SPARKS, Nev. (AP) — Troopers say a trucker lost a load of gravel and dirt on Interstate 80 and prompted a 20-car pileup.

Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Dave Gibson says nine people were checked for minor or moderate injuries after the incident about 9 a.m. Monday some 17 miles east of Sparks.

Gibson says the truck was carrying three trailers, including at least one "belly dump" trailer that opens along the bottom. He says it's unclear why the vehicle lost its load along the highway.

Gibson says gravel and dirt spread over the two westbound lanes and caused vehicles to spin out and hit guardrails.

The crash scene closed both lanes for nearly three hours. Gibson says one woman waiting in the gridlock started experiencing labor pains and was airlifted to a Reno hospital.
