INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A report of shots fired led to an exchange of gunfire in an Indianapolis alley where a police officer was killed and the suspect critically wounded. Authorities say veteran officer Perry Renn was pronounced dead at a hospital last night. He had gone into the alley with another officer.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Education researchers say they have found that some students simply wilt away between the last day of high school and the first day of college. They call it "summer melt" and say it happens when the excitement of acceptance wears off and the reality of finances housing and other details kick in and students abandon their plans. Studies suggest the figure as much as 20 percent in some places.
NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Overnight attacks in Kenya have killed 18 people in two areas along the coast. The Kenya Red Cross says Al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab militants from Somalia claimed responsibility for the attacks. It's the same region where al-Qaida-linked militants claimed responsibility for killing 65 people last month.
JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli police say an American teenager who was detained during violent protests over the killing of a Palestinian youth has been brought before a court to extend his detention. The boy's parents say he was beaten. Police say Tariq Abu Khdeir resisted arrest. The boy's cousin was the one killed in an apparent revenge attack. The U.S. State Department said it's "profoundly troubled" by reports of the beating.
BEIJING (AP) — The latest "Transformers" movie, which features Chinese locations, actors and products, has so far earned almost as much in China, $134 million, as in the United States, $149 million, driven by a record number of screenings for a foreign movie. "Transformers: Age of Extinction" heavily courted the Chinese audience by employing Chinese stars, basing part of the action in cities in China and showing Chinese products.
