WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says welcoming immigrants to America is part of the nation's DNA. Obama called on lawmakers today to complete an overhaul of the immigration system. The backdrop was a White House event in which 25 service members took a citizenship oath. They come from 15 countries.

BAGHDAD (AP) — Iraq's embattled leader says he has no plans to step aside despite pressure from the West and the country's top Shiite cleric. Nouri al-Maliki says he'll seek another term as prime minister and is pledging to stay on until the Sunni militants who have overrun much of the country are defeated. Al-Maliki, a Shiite who has been prime minister since 2006, has been accused by former allies and others of monopolizing power and contributing to the crisis by excluding Sunnis.

PARIS (AP) — French authorities won't elaborate, but security is being increase for flights headed to the United States this summer. There is growing U.S. concern that al-Qaida is trying to develop a new kind of bomb that could escape typical screening measures. The new security procedures could cause some delays.

KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina authorities are breathing a sigh of relief. Hurricane Arthur's 100 mph winds caused only minimal damage and power outages when it came ashore. The weather has also cleared, allowing beachgoers to head for the sand, restaurants and seaside accommodations. Arthur, now a Category 1 storm, is expected to make landfall again in southeastern Canada.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans police say a 20-year-old suspect has been arrested and faces a first-degree murder charge in connection with a Bourbon Street gunfight that left a woman dead and nine people hurt. He was captured today in Mississippi. He also faces nine counts of attempted first-degree murder. The exchange of gunfire happened early Sunday in the French Quarter. What sparked it remains unclear.
