KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. (AP) — Arthur is now a Category 2 hurricane, as it's expected to sling rain along the East Coast. Arthur made landfall Thursday night, near the southern end of North Carolina's Outer Banks, with winds of 100 mph, forcing vacationers along the North Carolina coast to abandon their July 4th plans. Fireworks shows in New Jersey, Maine and New Hampshire have been postponed until later in the weekend. The annual Boston Pops concert and fireworks show were held Thursday night.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A California chicken producer is issuing its first recall since being linked to an outbreak of an antibiotic-resistant strain of salmonella. The Department of Food and Agriculture says it's found evidence directly linking Foster Farms boneless-skinless chicken breast to the salmonella strain that's sickened more than 500 people in the past 16 months. Foster Farms has issued a recall for 170 different chicken products.
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama will preside Friday over an Independence Day citizenship ceremony for members of the military who signed up to serve even though they weren't American citizens. The deputy secretary for homeland security will deliver the oath of allegiance to 25 Armed Forces members at a White House ceremony.
PHOENIX (AP) — Flights have been grounded at the main airport in Phoenix because of a blinding dust storm. The National Weather Service says traveling on area roadways can also be dangerous. The Weather Service is predicting a 30 to 35 percent chance of rain for Friday.
NEW YORK (AP) — Hot dog! It's time for the annual hot dog-eating contest on New York's Coney Island. Thirteen women and 17 men will compete Friday before a crowd of about 30,000 spectators and a TV audience of about one million. A 205-pound Joey Chestnut is hoping to put away his competition by downing 70 hot dogs in 10 minutes. Two-time women's champ Sonya "The Black Widow" Thomas will try to eat more than 45 hot dogs. She weighs just 100 pounds.
