WASHINGTON (AP) — The unemployment rate is now at its lowest level since the financial crisis struck with full force in the fall of 2008. The decline in June from 6.3 percent to 6.1 percent came as employers added 288,000 jobs. Analysts say the falling unemployment rate should eventually cause salaries to rise more sharply. But no one knows precisely when that will happen.
NEW YORK (AP) — One trader on Wall Street says today's jobs report beat some of the "most optimistic" forecasts. Stocks were higher throughout the abbreviated pre-holiday session, with the Dow topping the 17,000 mark and staying there -- finishing with a gain of 92 points at 17,068. The S&P 500 is nearing a milestone of its own. It finished the day just 15 points shy of 2,000.
MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) — A judge in Georgia is refusing to grant bond for a man charged with murder after leaving his toddler son in a hot car for hours. The father's lawyer had told a hearing today that Justin Harris had no intention of leaving his son in the car -- and that he had texted his wife that afternoon, asking when she was going to pick up their son. But authorities have said Harris left the boy in the car intentionally. They say he had looked at websites that advocated against having children. Harris and his wife had two life insurance policies on their 22-month-old son.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Department of Veterans Affairs says it has reached out to nearly 140,000 veterans in the past two months to get them off waiting lists and into clinics for medical appointments. Acting VA Secretary Sloan Gibson revealed the number today as the VA released new figures showing improved patient access to hospitals and clinics nationwide. The announcement follows a national outcry over reports of patient deaths and treatment delays at VA facilities across the country.
SAO PAULO (AP) — At least two people are dead after an overpass that was under construction collapsed today in a World Cup host city in Brazil. Nineteen people were reported injured. Authorities say the collapse trapped a commuter bus, two construction trucks and a car.
