WASHINGTON (AP) — The militant being prosecuted for the deadly 2012 attack on the American consulate in Libya is due to appear in federal court Wednesday in Washington. Court filings say Ahmed Abu Khattala (hah-TAH'-lah) was motivated to participate in the violence by his extremist ideology. The attack claimed the lives of four Americans, including the U.S. ambassador.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Iraqi lawmakers meeting to form a new government have failed in their first attempt despite the immediate need to keep the country from unraveling. Minority Sunni and Kurdish members walked out of their first session despite the looming threat of Sunni extremists. The head of the group that has gobbled up towns and territory made an online appeal to all Muslims for support.
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — For the third time in a week, North Korea has fired two short-range projectiles into waters off its east coast. Wednesday's launch comes on the eve of a visit to South Korea by Chinese President Xi Jinping (shee jihn-peeng). The talks in Seoul are expected to focus on the North's nuclear weapons program.
DETROIT (AP) — A Michigan man who was punched in the head over the weekend while refereeing an adult-league soccer match in suburban Detroit has died. Police in Livonia say the suspect, already charged with assault, will likely have the charges upgraded. The victim was a 44-year-old hospital technician. Authorities say the man who punched him was angered because he was about to be ejected from the game.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Police in Philadelphia say a propane tank explosion on a food truck injured 11 people, including two who had serious burns. A fireball engulfed the truck and two passing car. Two of the victims were burned across a substantial part of their bodies.
