BRANDON, Miss. (AP) — The Mississippi auditor is demanding that a Rankin County School District nurse repay more than $16,000 for taking days off that were not reported in school leave records.
Auditor Stacey Pickering says in a news release Monday that his office issued a civil demand for $16,108 from Melanie Harrell Garner.
Pickering says an investigation shows Garner never treated any patients, although she had been hired as a nurse practitioner. Pickering says when his investigators pointed this out to school district officials, they responded that she was an administrator and her contract had been changed to reflect that title.
Garner is a daughter of Fred Harrell, the longtime attorney for the Rankin County School District.
No criminal charges were filed.
