PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) — The chief prosecutor says examination results show that Oscar Pistorius was not suffering from a mental illness when he killed girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in his home last year. The murder trial has been on hold for a month while a panel of mental health experts did the assessment. The trial resumed today.

WASHINGTON (AP) — If the Senate agrees, the revamping of the Veterans Affairs department will fall to a former corporate executive. An administration official says President Barack Obama will nominate former Procter & Gamble executive Robert McDonald. He'll inherit an agency gripped by reports of treatment delays, some patient deaths and cover-ups.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans police say two men who exchanged gunfire on Bourbon Street in the French Quarter, injuring nine people, are still on the loose. Two of the wounded remain in critical condition after yesterday's shooting. New Orleans Police Chief Ronal Serpas calls the shooters "two cowardly young men trying to hurt each other."

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan evacuated half a million people first, but now has launched its long awaited ground offensive targeting militant strongholds in the North Waziristan tribal near the Afghan border. The early part of the offensive began June 15 with mostly airstrikes to give civilians time to get out. Militants use the area as a safe haven from which to attack targets in both Pakistan and Afghanistan.

BEIJING (AP) — Prosecutors in China have announced murder and terrorism charges against four people for a knife attack that killed 29 people at a train station in the country's southwest, part of an upsurge in unrest the government blames on Muslim extremists. Today's announcement comes during a security crackdown launched after violence in China's southwest and attacks in the restive Muslim northwest.
