VERNON, Ariz. (AP) — Crews have made headway with burnout operations and fire retardant drops but a wildfire that has charred nearly 8 square miles in eastern Arizona's White Mountains still has no containment. The fire has not grown and winds that have whipped the flames in recent days slowed. Communities mostly populated with summer homes remained under mandatory evacuation orders, about 37 homes.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — An investigation is under way in Philadelphia in the death of a 3-year-old girl killed when a metal security gate fell on her. Officials say the gate detached from the facade of an Italian ice shop, a Rita's Water Ice store in north Philadelphia. A witness who lives in the area says stucco work had recently been done on the shop.
WASHINGTON (AP) — A flood of immigrants illegally crossing the border with Mexico has prompted President Barack Obama to seek an emergency response. He'll send a letter Monday to members of Congress requesting more than $2 billion and asking for new powers to deal with returning immigrant children apprehended while traveling without their parents. A White House official says details will come after lawmakers return from their holiday recess on July 7.
NEW DELHI (AP) — There's been another deadly building collapse in India. Police in southern India detained two construction company directors as rescuers using gas cutters and shovels searched for workers believed buried in the rubble of a building that collapsed during monsoon rains. It was one of two weekend building collapses that killed at least 20 people.
BAGHDAD (AP) — There continue to be conflicting reports as to how far the military advanced in an efforts to begin reclaiming ground taken by Sunni militants in Iraq. The Iraqi government launched its push with soldiers backed by tanks and helicopter gunships targeting the northern city of Tikrit, the hometown of former dictator Saddam Hussein. Residents say militants are still in control.
