SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Police have arrested a New Jersey man at the Rainbow Gathering accused of trying to rob a woman outside a store in Heber City.

Police obtained a warrant and arrested 24-year-old Scott McPherson at the Uinta National Forest on a robbery charge after he allegedly tried to steal a purse Thursday afternoon from a woman in her fifties.

The woman told police he was one of three panhandlers who surrounded her in a Walgreens parking lot and asked her for money. She said one tried to pull her purse off her shoulder, but she ran and alerted a store employee who called 911.

Police say an investigation is continuing and additional charges may be filed. The other man and woman with McPherson also had traveled from outside Utah to attend the counterculture gathering.
