WASHINGTON (AP) — A Libyan militant accused of masterminding the deadly Benghazi attacks has pleaded not guilty in a short hearing at the federal courthouse in Washington, D.C. U.S. special forces captured Ahmed Abu Khattala (hah-TAH'-lah) in Libya two weeks ago, marking the first breakthrough in the investigation of the 2012 attack. Officials had been questioning Abu Khattala aboard a Navy ship that transported him to the United States.

VERNON, Ariz. (AP) — Fire crews are hoping that lighter winds will allow them to gain some control over a wildfire that's burning uncontained in eastern Arizona's White Mountains. Windy conditions pushed the San Juan fire past containment lines to the east and west yesterday. Communities in the area, which is mostly populated with summer homes, are under mandatory evacuation orders.

ATLANTA (AP) — Police search warrants show the father of a Georgia toddler who died in a hot SUV told police that he did an online search about children dying in vehicles because he was afraid it could happen. Justin Ross Harris faces charges of murder and second-degree child cruelty in his 22-month-old son Cooper's death. Harris has told police he forgot the boy was in the car when he drove to work 10 days ago.

BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil (AP) — The host team at the World Cup has escaped elimination. After battling to a 1-1 draw over 120 minutes, Brazil beat Chile in a penalty shootout, 3-2. Neymar scored the winning penalty. Getting underway at this hour are Uruguay and Colombia. Uruguay is playing without its star striker. Luis Suarez has been banned from the rest of the World Cup for biting an Italian player.

LONDON (AP) — Five-time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams won't be winning a sixth this year. She lost to 25th-seeded Alize Cornet (uh-LEEZ' kohr-NAY') of France 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the third round today. It's Williams' earliest exit at the All England Club since 2005, when she also was beaten in the third round.
