NEW YORK, Jun 11, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- "The History Boys" won six Tonys, including one for best play, and "Jersey Boys" won for best musical at the 60th Tony Awards in New York Sunday.
"The History Boys," Alan Bennett's play about conflicting philosophies of education in British schools, also won for best director (Nicholas Hytner), best actor (Richard Griffiths) and best featured actress (Frances de la Tour).
Cynthia Nixon won for best actress in a play for "Rabbit Hole."
"Jersey Boys" -- based on the life story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons -- had eight Tony nominations and won four trophies. In addition to best musical, it won for best actor in a musical (John Lloyd Young), best featured actor in a musical (Christian Hoff) and best lighting design.
"The Color Purple" had 11 nominations, but took only one prize Sunday night -- when LaChanze won for best actress in a musical.
"The Drowsy Chaperone" won five Tonys, including best book for a musical and best original score.
"Awake and Sing!," Clifford Odets' Depression era drama won for best revival of a play, and "The Pajama Game" won for best revival of a musical.
