VISALIA, Calif. (AP) — A Tulare County resident infected with West Nile is the first human case of the virus to be reported in the central San Joaquin Valley this year.

The Fresno Bee reported Wednesday (http://bit.ly/1jQBbhu ) that the individual was hospitalized and is now recovering.

Delta Vector Control District also reported that 36 mosquito pools and 21 dead birds have tested positive for West Nile.

Officials are reminding residents to drain standing water that may produce mosquitoes and to report neglected swimming pools.

West Nile virus is transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes. Only about two of 10 people bitten will develop symptoms, which can include fever and body aches. But serious illness such as encephalitis and meningitis are possible, and the elderly are at greater risk.
