LAS VEGAS (AP) — Police fatally wounded a knife-wielding woman early Wednesday after officers reported seeing her breaking into a room and stabbing another woman at a short-stay apartment complex about 3 miles south of the Las Vegas Strip, authorities said.
Three children, all under the age of 5, were also in the apartment, but they escaped physical injury in the 12:10 a.m. incident at the Manor Suites complex on Las Vegas Boulevard South, Deputy Las Vegas Police Chief Kirk Primas said.
The children were taken into protective custody, and the woman who was attacked was treated at the scene for what Primas called superficial injuries. She declined hospitalization.
Investigators didn't immediately know whether the women knew each other, Primas said.
Two patrol officers responding to multiple calls about a disturbance involving person with a knife found the unidentified attacker on a second-floor balcony at the complex slashing a window, Primas said.
By the time the officers ran upstairs, the woman was in the apartment attacking the victim, Primas said.
One officer shot the attacker several times before she locked herself in the apartment bathroom.
Police forced their way in, arrested the woman and took her to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, Primas said.
