HAMMOND, La. (AP) — Southeastern Louisiana University's department of teaching and learning has been awarded a $120,000 grant from the Louisiana Department of Education to partner with the St. Charles Parish public school system to redesign teacher preparation programs.

The effort is intended to give teacher candidates more classroom time by matching them with seasoned educators in St. Charles.

Cynthia Elliott, interim head of the university's teaching and learning department, says the grant will be used to create full-year apprenticeships or residencies for teacher candidates.

Those selected for the program will begin working in July when St. Charles teachers return for professional development sessions and new- teacher orientation.
