BAGHDAD (AP) — A blitz by fighters of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant in Iraq's vast western desert is moving the al-Qaida breakaway group closer to its dream of carving out a purist Islamic state straddling both Syria and Iraq. On Sunday, the Sunni insurgents captured two border crossings, one along the frontier with Jordan and the other with Syria.

BAGHDAD (AP) — Iran's supreme leader says he's against any U.S. intervention in Iraq. And Ayatollah Ali Khamenei accuses Washington of fomenting the unrest. His comments appear to quash recent speculation that the two rivals might cooperate in addressing the shared threat posed by the Islamic extremists. The U.S. has long accused Iran of meddling in Iraq.

JERUSALEM (AP) — The Israeli military says it's carried out airstrikes on a number of military targets inside Syria, including a regional command center, in response to a cross-border attack that left an Israeli teenager dead. The military says nine targets were struck and "direct hits were confirmed."

SAN ANTONIO (AP) —Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl is now receiving outpatient care at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. He's been released from inpatient care at Brooke Army Medical Center. That's according to the Army, which says the "reintegration process" of the former prisoner of war in Afghanistan is proceeding with exposure to more people and a gradual increase of social interactions.

HOUSTON (AP) — Mayors from the Republican-dominated states of Texas and Arizona want cities to use natural solutions to fight the impacts of climate change. The U.S. Conference of Mayors will vote tomorrow on such a resolution. At the same time, GOP governors are blasting the Environmental Protection Agency for new rules to cut greenhouse gas emissions from power plants.
