WASHINGTON (AP) — The Treasury Department is lifting sanctions against more than 300 people and entities with suspected links to a now-defunct Colombian drug cartel.
Thursday's action is the largest single delisting in the history of the Treasury's sanctions program.
It follows the financial collapse of Colombia's Cali cartel. All those who had been sanctioned were part of a network led by Cali cartel leaders Miguel and Gilberto Rodriguez Orejuela (or-eh-HWAY'-luh). They remain on the sanctions list and are currently serving 30-year prison sentences in the United States.
The Treasury department says it has determined that those who are being delisted have credibly shown they have stopped engaging in activities that triggered the sanctions.
