LAKE ISABELLA, Calif. (AP) — Officials in California say firefighters have made significant progress containing 50 percent of a smoky mountain wildfire west of a lake near Bakersfield. ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Residents of two Native American communities near the New Mexico-Arizona border have been forced to leave their homes as strong winds fanned the flames of a wildfire burning in the Chuska Mountains. The blaze has ballooned to more than 17 square miles.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama has notified Congress that up to 275 troops could be sent to Iraq to provide support and security for U.S. personnel and the American Embassy in Baghdad. A U.S. official says about 170 of those forces have already arrived and another 100 soldiers will be on standby in a nearby country until they are needed. Iraq is in the throes of a Sunni insurgency spearheaded by an extremist group.

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) — For one evening, Pete Rose was a baseball manager again. The 73-year-old Major League record hitter served as guest skipper for the Bluefish of the independent Atlantic League during their 2-0 win over the Lancaster (Pennsylvania) Barnstormers in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Rose, banned for betting on baseball, could take this one-game job because the Bluefish are not affiliated with any major league team.
