KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — The Ukrainian Defense Ministry is condemning the shoot-down of a large military transport plane by pro-Russian separatists in the east. The statement from the ministry says the plane was downed at night as it approached an airport at Luhansk, killing 49 service members. The plane was also carrying equipment and food.
JERUSALEM (AP) — Three teenagers, including a U.S. citizen, are missing in the West Bank and there are concerns they were kidnapped by Palestinian militants. Israeli security forces are combing the West Bank and examining footage from security cameras belonging to local shopkeepers and residents. The teens disappeared Thursday night after leaving their Jewish seminary.
BAGHDAD (AP) — While Iraqi government troops have seemingly melted away at the advance of Islamic militants this week, hundreds of young Iraqi men are flocking to volunteer centers across Baghdad to join the fight against the insurgents. They are responding today to a call by Iraq's most revered Shiite cleric to defend their country against the Sunni Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A strike by 400 workers at the Southeast Pennsylvania Transportation Authority's regional rail system has shut down 13 lines leading to suburbs and the airport, forcing Philadelphia travelers to find alternatives. Major construction projects are making things even more difficult than usual. The union says one issue is wages. Subways, trolleys and buses operated by SEPTA are continuing to run.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Kings are the NHL Stanley Cup champions. It took double overtime in game five for the Kings to squeeze out a 3-2 win. Alec Martinez scored 14:43 into the second overtime for the Kings, who rallied from yet another deficit before finishing off the Rangers in the longest game in franchise history.
