ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistani intelligence officials say a suspected U.S. missile strike has killed at least 10 people in a northwestern tribal area near the Afghan border. The officials say American drones fired three missiles into a militant compound and a vehicle. There was another strike hours earlier, also in North Waziristan.
BAGHDAD (AP) — Iraqi cities and towns in northern Iraq are being toppled by Al-Qaida-inspired militants. Fighters from the militant group known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant have taken Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit (tih-KREET'). Mosul, Iraq's second-largest city, fell Wednesday. Turkey says the insurgents have abducted 48 people at its embassy in Mosul.
WASHINGTON (AP) — A new survey finds that only 39 percent of Americans have a mix of liberal and conservative positions. Pew Research Center says the survey suggests there is a spike in divided ideology and partisanship. The division is spreading from voting booths and affects who Americans choose to associate with and where they get their news.
HOUSTON (AP) — Child-welfare officials say a Houston mother kept her 9-year-old daughter's body in a refrigerator for six months after her death. The girl had cerebral palsy and weighed just 14 pounds when she died. A neighbor discovered the body and contacted police. The woman's 5-year-old daughter has been placed in protective custody.
KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine (AP) — Former President George H.W. Bush is celebrating his 90th birthday. Bush will mark the milestone at his family's seaside retreat in Maine. A family spokesman says the guest list for a private dinner includes more than 200 relatives and friends, including some from his White House days. A friend says Bush, who uses a wheel chair, has lost his mobility, but not his heart.
