RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Two professors from the same college will compete in Virginia in November for the congressional seat now held by House Majority Leader Eric Cantor. The seven-term Republican suffered a stunning defeat in Tuesday's primary to tea party-backed economics professor David Brat. He and Democratic nominee Jack Trammel both teach at Randolph Macon College, in suburban Richmond.
TROUTDALE, Ore. (AP) — Oregon authorities say a teen gunman armed with a rifle shot and killed a 14-year-old student and injured a teacher before he likely killed himself at a high school in the town of Troutdale. Police say officers found the suspect slumped on a toilet in a bathroom at Reynolds High School.
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama has surrendered in his efforts to enact gun control legislation. The president says he's terrified as a parent and ashamed as an American that nothing is being done to put a stop to random shooting sprees. He says people with guns are doing "unbelievable damage." Obama says he hopes there will be a fundamental shift in public opinion that will spur lawmakers to act.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A California judge has struck down tenure and other job protections for the state's public school teachers. In what's considered a landmark decision, Judge Rolf Treu (troy) ruled that such laws harm students — especially poor and minority ones — by saddling them with bad teachers who are almost impossible to fire. The California Teachers Association says it will file an appeal.
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) — The truck driver charged in the fatal highway crash that also critically injured comedian Tracy Morgan and several other people is due for an initial court appearance on Wednesday. Charges against Kevin Roper include death by auto and assault by auto. Roper was driving a Wal-Mart truck early Saturday when he allegedly swerved to avoid slowed traffic on the New Jersey Turnpike and plowed into Morgan's limo.
