YANKTON, S.D. (AP) — Mount Marty College has named longtime Sioux Falls Catholic Schools Administrator Thomas Lorang as its interim president.

Lorang will lead the Yankton school as it looks for a successor to Joseph Benoit, who resigned last month — less than three years after being hired — to resume a science teaching and research career.

Lorang, 70, who early in his career was a guidance counselor and coach in Yankton, has been administrator of Sioux Falls Catholic Schools since 1991. He had already decided to retire at the end of June. Until then he will work part-time at Mount Marty's main campus in Yankton. The Catholic school has about 600 students at Yankton and another 500 students at facilities in Watertown and Sioux Falls.

"I was going to do consulting with schools after I retired, so this became a longer-term consulting job than what I had anticipated," Lorang told the Daily Press & Dakotan newspaper.

He does not plan to seek the school's presidency on a long-term basis.

The Hartford native has bachelor's degrees in history and English from Dakota State College and three degrees from the University of South Dakota: an education specialist degree in education psychology, a master's degree in guidance counseling and a doctorate degree in in administration.
