NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) — A truck driver from Georgia is facing multiple charges in New Jersey stemming from the crash that critically injured actor and comedian Tracy Morgan and killed another comedian, who performed as Jimmy Mack. Police say the tractor trailer driver rammed into a chauffeured limousine bus after swerving to avoid congestion, setting off a six-vehicle crash. Officials say 35-year-old Kevin Roper is charged with death by auto and assault by auto.
PARIS (AP) — A senior U.S. official says Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl (boh BURG'-dahl) is telling military authorities that he was tortured, beaten and caged after trying to escape his Taliban captors in Afghanistan. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he's not authorized to discuss what Bergdahl is saying while being treated at a U.S. military medical facility. The New York Times reports that Bergdahl is not yet emotionally prepared to return home.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House says President Barack Obama is readying new executive steps to help Americans who are struggling to pay off their student debt. Among the steps Obama plans to announce tomorrow is the expansion of an existing program that prevents borrowers from having to pay more than 10 percent of their monthly income in student loan payments.
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Police and villagers continue to search for bodies in a remote part of northern Afghanistan two days after a deadly flash flood. Officials say the death toll has climbed past 80, thousands are homeless and hundreds of houses were destroyed.
CAIRO (AP) — Egypt's new president has taken office. Former army chief Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi (AHB'-del fat-AH' el-SEE'-see) was sworn in today as leader of a nation roiled since 2011 by deadly unrest and economic woes. The day has been declared a national holiday and security has been tight in Cairo.
