SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The state wildlife board has approved a first-ever crow hunt, making Utah the 46th state to have such a hunt.
The Utah Wildlife Board approved the proposal by a 3-2 vote at a meeting Thursday.
The Division of Wildlife Resources says the proposal creates a new hunting opportunity and will mitigate damage the birds cause to fruit crops.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1q0gxQf ) several people expressed concerns that justification for the hunt does not appear to be based on science or data but anecdotal stories.
Most crows in Utah are found in urban areas where hunting is barred, so the upcoming crow hunt will likely be limited to the shows of the Great Salt Lake.
The season would run from Sept. 1-30 and Dec. 1 to Feb. 28.
