HAILEY, Idaho (AP) — There will be no hero's welcome for Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl in his hometown of Hailey, no fanfare of parades, music or picnics in the park. A planned celebration for the end of June marking his return after five years of Taliban captivity in Afghanistan has been scrapped. The town of 8,000 has been swamped with hate mail and angry calls, labeling Bergdahl un-American and a traitor. Given the prospect of large crowds on both sides of the debate, organizers abruptly canceled their welcome home celebration.
CONSTANTA, Romania (AP) — Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has phoned the family of released captive Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl. A senior defense official says Hagel told Bob and Jani Bergdahl that the Pentagon will continue to support the soldier's medical care and reintegration. Hagel told reporters yesterday that the rush to judgment about Bergdahl is unfair to his family.
CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — An Associated Press analysis of federal temperature records shows average temperatures in Boise have risen 4 degrees in the last 30 years. It's the second-highest rise in the nation behind only Carson City, Nevada, which has increased 4.1 degrees since 1984.
BUTTE, Mont. (AP) — Wildlife officials say a hunter who was attacked by a grizzly bear in southwestern Montana last weekend didn't suffer life-threatening injuries. A Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks spokeswoman says the victim remains in a Seattle hospital in serious but stable condition. She says the male grizzly was shot dead near where the hunter was mauled. An investigation is ongoing.
