ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — An investigation has found a U.S. Naval Academy midshipman who died in a car crash on campus in February had been drinking at an Annapolis bar before the incident.
The investigation found 25-year-old Max Allen of Chesterfield, Virginia, returned to his dorm on campus Feb. 15. Shortly after, he went back out, got into his Ford SUV, struck a building and swerved off the road into College Creek. The vehicle was submerged.
The Capital (http://bit.ly/1h5JytC ) obtained results of the academy investigation.
Investigators found that Allen briefly struggled to escape from his vehicle in the water before succumbing to cold water temperatures. A final autopsy listed the cause of death as hypothermia, complicated by drowning.
Investigators recommended the academy conduct additional training in vehicle safety and the effects of alcohol.
