WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House has apologized to key lawmakers for not notifying them in advance about the exchange of five Taliban detainees for Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl (boh BURG'-dahl). Sens. Dianne Feinstein (FYN'-styn) of California and Saxby Chambliss of Georgia, the top Democrat and Republican respectively on the Senate Select committee on Intelligence, said White House officials called them yesterday to say the lack of notification had been an oversight. The White House damage control comes as Republican lawmakers accused the White House of putting U.S. service men and women at risk by releasing five top Taliban members being held in Guantanamo in exchange for Bergdahl.
MIAMI (AP) — A war crimes case is being prepared against a Guantanamo Bay prisoner who's accused of plotting roadside bombing attacks in Afghanistan as a commander of al-Qaida. Under military rules, he'll be arraigned at the U.S. base in Cuba within 30 days.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Authorities in San Francisco say the items that were found in the apartment of a social media expert included ball bearings, screws and components that would be needed to make a homemade bomb. Those details come in an affidavit that was unsealed today. Investigators say they found the materials during a search of the apartment of Ryan Chamberlain over the weekend. He was arrested yesterday and is charged with possessing an illegal destructive device.
MILWAUKEE (AP) — A defense lawyer for a 12-year-old Wisconsin girl says she shows signs of mental illness, and should be in a hospital. The girl and another 12-year-old have been charged as adults with first-degree attempted homicide, in a stabbing attack on another girl the same age. Authorities say the girls were trying to please a fictional character after reading stories about the character online. The girls said the character, called Slenderman, required them to kill someone before they could become his "proxy."

It's the first dues increase in 47 years for the UAW, which has been selling assets and raiding its strike fund to pay operating expenses. Membership in the UAW has dropped from a peak of about 1.5 million in 1979 to about 391,000 today.
