WASHINGTON (AP) — The European Union's commissioner for climate change is calling President Barack Obama's plan to reduce power plant emissions "the strongest action ever taken by the U.S. government to fight climate change." Power plants are America's largest source of greenhouse gases, accounting for 38 percent of annual emissions. Critics say the proposal will hurt the economy.
GUATEMALA CITY (AP) — At least five people have been killed by a landslide in Guatemala, where residents are being urged to take precautions because of the threat of flooding. Several rivers have burst their banks and the drainage systems in at least four western provinces have collapsed.
SEATTLE (AP) — Six climbers on Washington's Mount Rainier are presumed dead after a fall from one of the most technical and physically grueling routes. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — San Francisco's famed cable cars stopped running today and the rest of the city transit system experienced delays when drivers called in sick a few days after a contract vote. The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency operated just a third of its normal morning service. It serves about 700,000 passengers each day.
SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle City Council has unanimously passed an ordinance that gradually increases the minimum wage in the city to $15, which would make it the highest in the nation. The measure, which would take effect on April 1, 2015, includes a phase-in of the wage increase over several years, with a slower process for small businesses. The plan gives businesses with more than 500 employees nationally at least three years to phase in the increase.
