BAGRAM AIR FIELD, Afghanistan (AP) — U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel says Congress was kept in the dark about the decision to trade Guantanamo detainees for an American soldier held by the Taliban because the U.S. had information that Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl's (boh BURG'-dahlz) life was in danger. Hagel arrived in Afghanistan today for a progress report on Afghan forces as U.S. troops prepare to leave. Two Republican lawmakers say the administration broke the law by not informing Congress.

BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) — Authorities in Massachusetts say seven people died when the private plane they were taking to Atlantic City crashed and burned at an air field not far from Boston. Nearby residents recounted seeing a fireball and feeling the blast of the explosion shake their homes. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A strike threat remains today at one Las Vegas hotel but union negotiators have struck contract deals with several other Casinos. The Las Vegas Review-Journal and KLAS-TV report that officials at Culinary Workers Local 226 and Bartenders Local 165 say workers at the Golden Gate plan to walk out unless a last-minute agreement is reached.

MIAMI (AP) — It's day one of the 2014 Atlantic hurricane season and experts have some new forecasting wrinkles to test. For the first time, they'll be dropping small drones into storms in the hope they can learn more about how storms strengthen and better predict their intensity. Another change will be a greater emphasis on forecasting storm surge, one of the greatest hazards of hurricanes and tropical storms. Forecasters predict tropical weather won't be as intense.

BAGHDAD (AP) — The United Nations is reporting the highest monthly death toll so far this year in Iraq. The U.N. mission to Iraq says violence claimed the lives of 799 Iraqis, including 603 civilians in May. The worst-hit city was the capital, Baghdad, with 315 people killed.
