WASHINGTON (AP) — Eric Shinseki has stepped down as Veterans Affairs secretary, two days after agency investigators reported widespread problems in the VA hospital system. Before offering his resignation in a private meeting with President Barack Obama, the retired four-star general offered a public apology to veterans and their families. He called the problems outlined Wednesday in an inspector general's report "totally unacceptable" and a "breach of trust."
WASHINGTON (AP) — A preliminary Veterans Affairs audit of widespread health care problems for veterans concludes that in some cases VA schedulers were pressured to use bad practices to make waiting times for medical appointments look more favorable. The audit was presented to President Barack Obama today by Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki, who then submitted his resignation. It says a decision to set a maximum 14-day wait time for appointments without necessary resources amounted to an organizational leadership failure.
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Pennsylvania's governor has met with a special prosecutor investigating his handling of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse case while he was attorney general. A spokeswoman for Gov. Tom Corbett tells The Associated Press the meeting was earlier this week. The investigation grew out of Kathleen Kane's successful 2012 campaign to become the first Democrat and the first woman elected Pennsylvania's attorney general. During the campaign, she repeatedly questioned why it took the Republican so long to file charges against the former Penn State coaching assistant.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — The attorney general of Florida says in court documents that recognizing same-sex marriages performed in other states would "impose significant public harm." The filing is in response to a suit by eight gay couples and the American Civil Liberties Union, who say Florida is discriminating against the couples by not recognizing same-sex marriages performed in states where they are legal.
