RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A North Carolina House committee has approved new rules requiring schools to identify students with military ties.
The House Education Committee passed a Military Student Identifier bill Tuesday. It develops an annual identification process for students who have immediate family serving in the active or reserve military so schools can meet their needs, especially when students change schools often.
The N.C. Press Association says it's concerned that the bill that could further limit access to records. Association attorney John Bussian asked the committee to consider language that would keep school-related records accessible.
The committee staff agreed to discuss the concerns, but added that personal student records are already exempt from the open records act.
The bill is identical to a Senate version which is currently in the Senate Education Committee.
