FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) — The Slide Fire burning in and around Oak Creek Canyon in northern Arizona continues to grow in size even though firefighters have established a containment line around all of it.
The fire's size increased from nearly 29 square miles Monday evening to close to 32 square miles this morning as crews carry out burnout operations intended to deprive the fire of fuel.
The fire's official containment figure remains at 35 percent because some areas within the containment line still have active low-intensity fire while others remain hot to the touch.
Fire officials say some of the fire crews are being reassigned as they gain control over the blaze. More than 1,200 personnel were fighting the fire at its peak.
The fire started a week ago and is blamed on human causes.
