Bowdoin College starts weekend with commencement

BRUNSWICK, Maine (AP) — Maine's Bowdoin College says 484 students have received degrees at its 209th commencement ceremony.

The class includes students from 37 states and the District of Columbia, and from 15 countries and territories. In accordance with Bowdoin tradition, the speakers at Saturday's commencement were students, James Denison and Kate Kearns.

Past student speakers have included Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in 1825 and Arctic explorer Robert E. Peary in 1877.

Honorary doctorates were awarded to civil rights advocate Mary Bonauto, career diplomat Christopher Hill, ornithologist Richard Prum and physiological researcher Harriet Wallberg.
