GREENWOOD, Miss. (AP) — Auditors from the Mississippi Department of Education are at the Greenwood School District this week looking at how federal programs are handled.
Department spokeswoman Patrice Guilfoyle told The Greenwood Commonwealth (http://bit.ly/1o2RSwE ) the visit is a follow-up to an earlier round of inspections, completed at the beginning May.
Superintendent Montrell Greene said the auditors arrived on Monday but didn't say how long they would be staying.
"They're here gathering more information as an extension of the earlier audit," he said. "I can't say for sure why they're here now as opposed to earlier."
During their previous visit, state auditors checked paperwork, inspected facilities and observed classes over three days.
The initial audit was random and was not prompted by concerns or complaints about the district, said Guilfoyle. She declined to say what prompted the follow-up visit.
"Once the audit is complete and the report filed, then all of that will be public," Guilfoyle said.
Greene said he wasn't sure if auditors had looked at the federal programs during their first visit to the district.
"We look to get whatever feedback they have for us at the appropriate time," he said.
