UNDATED (AP) — A ten-month primary campaign that cost $12 million is coming to a close today in Kentucky, where Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell is poised to beat a tea party-styled challenger, Matt Bevin. At one point, Bevin had been considered a threat to McConnell, but he faded after attending a rally to legalize cockfighting. Today, Bevin is pushing back at suggestions that the tea party is losing its four-year drive to disrupt the Washington establishment. He calls that idea "bunk," and says that the "conviction to do the right thing" is "alive and well." High-profile primaries from Oregon to Georgia today will help determine which party controls the Senate.

DENVER (AP) — The U.S. Forest Service says it is adding four aircraft to its firefighting fleet as California recovers from a spate of blazes, and other states brace for another hot, dry summer. That brings the total to 21 large airtankers and more than 100 helicopters. The announcement comes as the Obama administration pushes Congress to ensure that enough money is available to fight destructive wildfires. The Forest Service expects to exceed this year's budget in July, two months before this fiscal year ends.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Once again, the world is seeing record heat levels. The average global temperature last month tied the hottest April on record four years ago. The last time the globe's monthly temperature was cooler than normal was February 1985. A government scientist says the United States and Canada were the few exceptions last month -- though even the United States was a tad warmer than normal.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — An actor who starred in a police drama is now in the custody of Los Angeles authorities, on suspicion of shooting his wife to death in their home. Michael Jace played a police officer in the hit TV show "The Shield." He was arrested after authorities responding to a report of gunshots found his wife dead. Bail has been set at $1 million.

BOSTON (AP) — Investigators say the veteran Boston-area bus driver whose bus crashed through a guardrail, leaving the front end hanging over the Massachusetts Turnpike, appeared to have a cellphone in her hand at the time. The transit police report says Shanna Shaw told investigators after Sunday's crash in Newton that a sneezing fit caused her to lose control. But police who reviewed video surveillance from the bus say Shaw was holding an item the size and shape of a cell phone. The system's bus operators are barred from carrying phones on the job. Shaw is facing charges including obstruction of justice and speeding. Seven passengers were hurt in the crash.
